South Bend, IND. -- South Bend Schools is named ‘News Media School of the Year’ for the second year in a row!

The award comes from the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters, which supports and recognizes high school students in broadcast media.

South Bend School's Broadcast Media and Film Production Program is based out of Riley High School, but it’s open to students from any high school in the district.

Students highlight more than just what’s going on in the building - they produce all kinds of content for their community, from high school coverage to local businesses, and even Notre Dame.

Shows produced by students include a newscast, a sports zone show, a podcast, and radio show.

Students also create video projects for Dr. Todd Cummings, and they’re currently working on a mini-documentary about Matt Reum, who survived the car crash in Portage, with the help of their media assistant – Erika Celeste.

Helping to edit and shoot a lot of their content is third year student, Matthew Pandori-Tessely, who’s also interning with the South Bend Education Foundation.

The class is a CTE course and students earn dual credit – meaning they'll be able to take more than just their skills and experience to college – they'll already have earned credits too.

The Media Instructor at South Bend Schools, Timothy Richardson, says, “It's just been great for the students and great for our program to be able to be recognized for the work we do. And we get to see what other people are doing in the state. And it really helps us be better.”
