I love playdough. I find it therapeutic, so I’m always happy to make a batch. Although my kids aren’t neat playdough players. If I turn my back for a moment, it’s thrown all around the living room and in places that I don’t want it to go.
But I’m a sucker, and I make it again and again. This is my favourite Thermomix Playdough recipe. It’s super smooth and beautiful. If you don’t have a Thermomix, you could try this No Cook Playdough recipe instead. Once you’ve made either recipe, store it in an airtight container.

Ingredients

110g cooking salt
1 tbsp cream of tartar
290g boiling water (boil this in your kettle before you start)
330g plain flour (and keep a little extra for at the end)
15g vegetable oil (or coconut oil/or any oil of your choice)
Food colouring
Instructions
1. Put water in your kettle and turn it on.
2. Place the salt in your Thermomix Bowl and blend for 10 seconds on Speed 8. It will be a fine powder when you’re done. Add in the cream of tartar and blitz for 2 seconds on Speed 8 to combine.
3. Pour in the boiling water and cook at 60° on Speed 4 for 4 minutes.
4. Add the flour and blitz for 40 seconds on Speed 3. It should be combined, but if not blitz for a little longer.
5. Add the oil and then pulse until mixed together. Scrape the playdough from your Thermomix Bowl onto a clean bench-top. If you don’t want food colouring to touch your benchtop you can do this in a bowl. I like to poke a hole into the dough and pour in a few drops of food colouring. Knead to spread the colouring throughout the dough.
6. As you’re kneading your dough, you’ll be able to tell whether you need more flour or not. This will depend on how much food colouring you’ve used. If the dough is wet, or sticking to your bench-top, sprinkle a little extra flour (1 tsbp at a time) and knead until it is no longer sticky.
7. Store in an airtight container or in a seal-able bag. This lasts for a few months.

Will definitely try adding the food dye into the water next time as some have suggested as I have blue hands now ? Lol

How long do you think this would last? Would different brand flours make it any different? I made it and it’s quite sticky, don’t know if I put too much of something in or not enough flour…

I wait until it cools before putting in a container so it doesn’t sweat. x

How funny that this was in your newsletter this morning! Miss 4 1/2 loves play-doh, I do enjoy it too but all the little bits that end up everywhere and squished into the carpet put a bit of a damper on the whole experience. However, play-doh disappeared from our house for a year and now she is MUCH better at keeping in ON the table. AND she knows the drill – she has to vacuum up around the table afterwards, every time! (Yep, another mean mum!). BUT, it was just yesterday we were playing together with it, for about 2 hours aswell. Making all sorts of shapes and ‘furniture’ and decorations. She stole all of my cake making tools to imprint in her playdoh food. We just agreed that we would make a batch of playdoh this weekend if she keeps her room clean this week 🙂

I always put the food colouring in the water so that I don’t get food colouring all over my hands, bench etc.
In your Thermomix too? It doesn’t colour any parts? I’ve only had mine for 5 weeks…..I’m too scared to put it in with the water but it’s a great idea!

Hi Michelle, no it doesn’t colour any parts. We’ve had ours for about 18 months now and make playdough in it very regulary.
whenever I’m using the thermie and I think something might stain the lid (cause the bowl won’t stain) I spray with cooking oil and it doesn’t stain 🙂

LolI made this tonight and it was really sticky, like scrape off the “floured” bench sticky. The second batch I up’d it to 450gms flour and it came out better. I also add color to the water then sprinkle with glitter as I’m kneading

JuliePerfect recipe! Cannot believe how smooth it is! I made a Christmas version this morning for my girls by making ‘gingerbread’ playdough. I added ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves to the flour. No food colouring needed and it smells and looks just like gingerbread dough!

Can you just kneed in the thermi ? Instead of on Bench ?
I did 1 minute on the dough setting and it was perfect

Am I the first person to see that the recipes are different??
The first one has 290g water and 330g flour…. The second has 330g water and 350g flour.
I followed the second recipe and ended up with a very sticky mess….This is the easiest play dough I’ve ever made. I have a junior primary teacher daughter and she said she is buying a thermomix just to make okay dough lol.
Best playdough ever. I put oil and colouring in at the end of cooking cicle and put it onto dough setting. Been a mum for 23years and this is the easiest and best playdough Ever.
The best recipe ever….and for those wondering you can totally double the recipe – it works perfectly! I just milled the salt for double the time and i also did step 4 for a bit longer and used the dough mode to knead. I also found adding the colouring at the water stage resulted in a better colour mix.
