WOW and Viacom get it on in the ring

Sounds like this is effecting a number of cable providers.

Say goodbye to those networks.

Also, can WOW really be considered a "small, independent" cable company?

On FB someone says its 23 networks/channels. Not sure how they came to that number but when a cable TV provider doesn't provide major cable networks the following comes to mind:

When is a cable company not a cable company?

Someone asked what channels they were, but didn't get an answer. From google it looks like MTV, vh1, nick, spike and sub channels of those. Am sure there are others.

I don't think WOW has that many customers. Anytime I see the largest cable companies listed WOW isn't on the list. I'm actually surprised they make the Consumer Reports reviews.

A couple weeks ago when the Comcast/TW merger stuff was in the news, I saw a listing with the top 6-8 or so companies, and the smallest only has like 2-3mil users. So WOW must be smaller than that. If I recall Comcast had like 50m, and TW had 31m.

Do you have a link to a list? I'd be interested to see how the companies rank in size. I always wondered how big WOW may be.

Who to believe?

»www.keepviacom.com/ »www.keepviacom.com/get-facts

Like I said, is it really a cable TV company if it doesn't give me cable TV? WOW already doesn't participate in many programs like WatchESPN, WatchABC, etc. To lose a major block of cable networks doesn't seem the way to be a player in the industry.

They need to figure it out and I'm sure they will. Otherwise most WOW customers have options for other cable providers (I don't mean AT&T, but Comcast and the like). I would hate to leave WOW but if I'm paying for cable TV I want cable TV.

I think the day is coming when cable companies will just be internet. And we will all stream our content via set top boxes. We will just pay for the content we want as individuals. I know the cable companies don't like this, but I think this is where we are headed.

It's Viacom who is bad just having this site is bad but that they don't care about everyone is why they are bad.

If it moves to this model wouldn't Viacom (and others) do the same to Netflix and Amazon and Hulu, etc regarding pricing? And then those providers (or whoever supplies the content) will have to raise their prices. Or not provide the content.

I'm sure they will. I'm not picking sides in this debate. Part of me would like to see WOW just tell them to take a hike, especially now that I no longer use them. Even so, other than 1-2 shows I watch on MTV, I dont really care about any of the Viacom channels.

This is why Viacom is evil. It's everyone not just wow. They might win the Worst Company in the USA because of this.

I feel like both sides take too much of my money. Hard to feel bad for either, when it is the customer that keeps getting screwed. I don't understand how Viacom can ask for more money when their channels are mostly crap. On the other hand, I get sick of hearing cable operators complain about getting squeezed when they have such massive margins. The fact WOW was giving me free equipment, along with a sizable monthly discount goes to show how high cables companies margins are.

And WOWs "pledge" is meaningless to me. They hit me with a below the line, $3.75 tv broadcast surcharge. Depending on how you want to split your bill up between services, that is between a 5-10% hike on the TV portion of the bill.

That reminds me, a few months ago, my old Knology remote stopped working (or at least a few of the buttons did) and I called and they mailed me a replacement. I stopped out to their office to return the old Knology remote and they said they didn't need it anymore and gave me another free remote. So, now I have one remote I'm using plus a backup I have in storage.

Just drop the channels and give us a break on our bills.

My kids moved on from watching Nick to watching Sprout. MTV doesn't show music videos anymore. It's always Real World whatever. VH1? I haven't seen that channel in forever. Comedy Central edits everything out of movies so it's not worth watching. Spike is somewhat good but only for a few shows.

Give us a lower bill and back away from the talks. Let Viacom receive zero money.

To those who will be mad if those channels are lost, you don't get to complain next time WOW raises your bill because they need to pay viacom 40x more the cost of inflation to keep these channels for you.

The fact that Viacom created an entire website with a directory of all the cable companies that are not accepting their demands makes it pretty obvious where the problem is. A dispute with one cable company is one thing, but a dispute with 1000 cable companies means your demands are just plain greedy. Instead of trying to fix the fact that their content is really declining in popularity, they're choosing to just try and get more money for it instead of actually putting forth the effort to make better content.

I won't be happy to lose Comedy Central for one, but there's other ways I can get this content, and I would rather not have my bill go up $5+ a month for the rest of their terrible channels to stay.

Are there 23 channels (or whatever the actual number is) you have in mind to replace these? Or would you think its ok for the Viacom channels to be gone without any change to the cost?

Do you really think that would happen?

I really don't watch too many of the Viacom channels either but again I'll say it, if its cable TV shouldn't it include these major networks?

Lots of people seem to get their content elsewhere. That's fine but for those of us that pay for cable TV shouldn't we have the major channels?
